Get Ready to Apply for Covered California Open Enrollment!
The 2016 Open Enrollment begins on November 1st as this is the first day that you can enroll in a 2016 Marketplace plan. The first date in 2016 that coverage can start is January 1st 2016, and 2016 Open Enrollment ends on January 31st, 2016.
If you miss this period of enrollment, you cannot receive a health insurance plan for 2016 unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. This is limited to a marriage, or birth of a child, or a loss of other health coverage.

While many people get ready to apply, there are those who are left to go uninsured. Unfortunately, there is a fee for not having any sort of health insurance coverage.
If you do not have coverage in 2016, you’ll have to pay the higher fee of these two amounts:
- 5% of your yearly household income
- $695 per person, $347.50 per child under 18 years old
The fee will be paid on the federal income tax return that you file for the year that you do not have coverage. For most people, their 2015 tax return will be filed in early 2016.
