Cyber-Security: Creating PasswordsEnsuring Safety From Cyber Criminals

In today’s day and age, cyber security cannot be stressed enough. Each and every one of us are faced with cyber liability on a daily basis, emphasizing the importance of taking preventative action. One key aspect that makes most of us vulnerable comes with password creation. Unfortunately, when it comes to creating a password to protect our accounts we think of something that is easy to remember, which makes things even easier for cyber criminals.

Cyber-Security: Creating Passwords 101

  • Many of us choose a password that is easy to remember so that we are always able to access our various accounts. However, cyber criminals are skilled in guessing these common combinations and know that you are likely to use the same password for multiple accounts. A safe rule of thumb is to never use any information that can be found on your social media accounts. For example, if you always post pictures of your dog named Charlie, making your password “Charlie1234!” may not be the cleverest password.
  • You should have a unique password for each and every account you have. This ensures that a criminal does not gain access to all of your accounts by guessing one.
  • Unfortunately, creating a unique password once is not enough. You must periodically change your password throughout the year to help to further deter cyber criminals.
  • If you are now worrying about how you are going to memorize all of these passwords, it may be advantageous to create a password list. However, do not make the mistake of storing this list on your computer. Your secret password list should be hidden in your home in a secure location.
