If you miss the period of enrollment, you cannot receive a health insurance plan for 2016 unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. A Special Enrollment Period is given if there is a qualifying life event that calls for an extension in application deadline.

- Got married or entered a domestic partnership
- Moved within or permanently to California
- Returned from active military service
- Gained citizenship or lawful presence
- Have lost or will soon loose your health insurance

Although applications for Medi-Cal are accepted year-round, applicants for Covered California must communicate details of the qualifying life event within 60 days of its occurrence in order to be eligible to receive a special enrollment period that lasts an average of 60 days as well.
