Enrollment is upon us! Find out if you are eligible for special enrollment.
The Patient Protection and the Affordable Care Act have teamed together to provide Californians with name-brand health coverage that could offer you and your family a discount on insurance from private companies or coverage under Medi-Cal.
We are in the midst of enrollment for the Covered California health insurance plans of 2016. Open enrollment began November 1, 2015 and will end January 31, 2016.
In order to apply you will need to:
- Get a general overview of the Marketplace
- Estimate your income
- Gather the documents you need
- Look into local insurance services for comparison
- Visit Covered California’s official website to apply now!
If you miss the period of enrollment, you cannot receive a health insurance plan for 2016 unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. A Special Enrollment Period is given if there is a qualifying life event that calls for an extension in application deadline.
Examples of qualifying life events are:
- Birth or adoption of a child
- Got married or entered a domestic partnership
- Moved within or permanently to California
- Returned from active military service
- Gained citizenship or lawful presence
- Have lost or will soon loose your health insurance
- For more examples and information about qualifying life events for Covered California, visit their official website.
Although applications for Medi-Cal are accepted year-round, applicants for Covered California must communicate details of the qualifying life event within 60 days of its occurrence in order to be eligible to receive a special enrollment period that lasts an average of 60 days as well.
